The City of Lufkin Animal Services is inviting community members to make a shelter dog’s day a little brighter through its new Tails Around Town program.

This innovative Dog Day Out program allows residents to spend a few hours with a shelter dog, giving them a much-needed break from the shelter environment while helping them gain exposure to potential adopters. Best of all, there is no long-term commitment required.

Participants can check out a shelter dog for a fun outing, whether that means a walk in the park, a ride around town, a pup cup stop, or simply relaxing together at home. Along the way, participants are encouraged to take photos and share their adventures on social media to help showcase the dogs' personalities and increase their visibility.

According to Animal Services staff, these outings provide significant benefits for shelter pets. Time outside the shelter helps reduce stress, offers valuable socialization opportunities, and can improve a dog's chances of finding a forever home.

How It Works

Community members can pick up and return a shelter dog during designated program hours:
