Lufkin Creative is proud to announce that the Lufkin Cultural District has been officially designated by the Texas Commission on the Arts (TCA), recognizing the artists, cultural organizations, businesses, public spaces, and community partnerships that make arts and culture part of everyday life in Lufkin.

The Lufkin Cultural District is one of four new cultural districts approved by TCA this year, bringing the total number of state-designated cultural districts in Texas to 61. The Texas Commission on the Arts is the only body authorized to officially designate cultural districts on behalf of the State of Texas.

Cultural districts are designed to harness local arts and cultural resources to strengthen economic development and community vitality. According to TCA, designated districts can serve as marketable tourism assets, helping communities attract visitors, generate business, stimulate cultural development, encourage investment, and foster civic pride. Official designation also makes the district and qualifying resident arts organizations eligible to apply for Texas Commission on the Arts Cultural District Project funding.

“This designation means so much to me because I have seen firsthand how much creativity, talent, and heart, already exists in Lufkin,” said Sandi Adams, Executive Director of Lufkin Creative. “It recognizes what our community has built together and gives us a stronger platform to tell Lufkin's story, support our creative community, grow cultural tourism, strengthen partnerships, and pursure new investments in the arts and culture. We are proud of this milestone, but even more about what comes next.”

 

A Creative Community Already at Work

TCA describes the Lufkin Cultural District as a walkable East Texas community where art is woven into the everyday experience.

The Museum of East Texas serves as a cornerstone of the district, offering free public access to exhibitions, educational programming, classes, workshops, and community art experiences. The historic Pines Theater, Angelina Arts Alliance, Angelina Community Theatre, Lufkin Art Guild, and Lufkin Limners contribute year-round creative programming that activates the community.

Beyond these cultural anchors, the district includes restaurants, shops, public art, artist studios, galleries, and other creative spaces that encourage people to experience art, support local businesses, connect with artists, and spend time exploring Lufkin. The district also creates opportunities for artists to earn income while helping make art more accessible to the public.

 

What Designation Means for Lufkin

The designation represents more than a title. It gives Lufkin another tool to strengthen the local creative economy and build greater visibility for the community.

Lufkin Creative to Lead the District

Lufkin Creative will serve as the Cultural District Management Entity (CDME) and district leader, acting as the primary liaison between the Lufkin Cultural District, district organizations, and the Texas Commission on the Arts.

In this role, Lufkin Creative will help coordinate district communications, cooperative marketing, tourism efforts, wayfinding, partnerships, grant-related support, and initiatives designed to improve the visitor experience.

“This is just the beginning,” Adams said. “We now have an opportunity to build on this recognition together, creating more opportunities for artists, strengthening local partnerships, supporting businesses, and making Lufkin an even more vibrant place to live, work, visit, and create.”

 

What Comes Next

Lufkin Creative will continue working with artists, cultural organizations, businesses, community partners, and local leaders to develop the Lufkin Cultural District as a connected and welcoming destination.

Upcoming efforts will focus on:

• Supporting artists and creative opportunities
• Building partnerships throughout the district
• Promoting Lufkin’s arts and cultural assets
• Developing district marketing and wayfinding
• Pursuing eligible grant opportunities
• Strengthening cultural tourism
• Sharing the stories of the artists, organizations, businesses, and people who make the district distinctive

The Texas Commission on the Arts will also provide an official proclamation recognizing the Lufkin Cultural District at a future designation event. Details will be announced as plans are finalized.
