Texas continues to see job growth, new workforce initiatives and policy discussions that could impact businesses across the state. From preparing employees for artificial intelligence to exploring new higher education opportunities, several developments are worth watching for employers in Angelina County.

Here's a look at the latest news from the Texas Association of Business (TAB) and what it could mean for our local business community.

Texas Leads the Nation in Annual Job Growth

According to August labor market data reported by TAB, Texas added 159,400 nonfarm jobs over the past 12 months, more than any other state. Total nonfarm employment reached 14.47 million, with an annual growth rate of 1.1%.

Professional and business services, leisure and hospitality, and construction were among the fastest-growing industries.

For East Texas employers, statewide job growth highlights the importance of workforce development, employee retention and preparing for changing labor demands.

New Three-Year Bachelor's Degree Pathways Under Consideration

Texas is exploring a statewide framework that would allow students to complete certain bachelor's degrees in three years.

Governor Greg Abbott has directed the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to convene a 13-member working group of university and community college educators. The group will identify degree programs and high-demand occupations suited to accelerated pathways while considering employer needs.

Recommendations are due December 31, 2026. According to the Governor's Office, the proposed pathways could reduce degree costs by up to 25%.

For local employers, shorter degree pathways could eventually help students enter the workforce sooner and create additional opportunities to address hiring needs.

Preparing Texas Workers for Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence is becoming an increasingly important part of workforce planning.

On September 22, the Texas Senate Committee on Economic Development is scheduled to examine how AI could affect workforce resilience, economic competitiveness and responsible technology adoption. TAB is scheduled to provide testimony.

These discussions are relevant to businesses of all sizes, including those in Angelina County, as employers consider how to incorporate new technology, train employees and adapt to changing job requirements.

Healthcare Funding for Texas Providers

Texas has secured nearly $12 billion in federal Medicaid funding following negotiations with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, according to TAB.

The funding supports hospitals, physicians, rural clinics, nursing facilities and behavioral health providers.

For communities like ours, the financial stability of rural healthcare providers is closely connected to access to care, workforce availability and the cost of employee healthcare.

Property Taxes and Other Legislative Issues

Texas lawmakers are also reviewing several issues affecting employers, including property taxes, energy infrastructure and regulatory permitting.

During recent House Ways and Means hearings, lawmakers examined property tax relief proposals, including appraisal caps and homestead exemptions. Preliminary research presented during the hearings suggested that certain appraisal caps could shift more of the tax burden to business and industrial properties.

Other legislative discussions have focused on energy permitting, renewable energy facility decommissioning, and banking regulations.
